Alison Diesel, DVM, DACVD of the Animal Dermatology Clinic, Austin, TX joins Kelly St. Denis, DVM, DABVP (Feline Practice), JFMS co-Editor-in-Chief, for a discussion about her recent JFMS Clinical Spotlight article, “The feline skin microbiome: interrelationship between health and disease.” Over the course of their discussion, Dr. Diesel shares how she got interested in the feline skin microbiome, how caregivers are beginning to recognize the importance bringing their feline patients to the dermatologist, and the benefits of next generation sequencing and how it picks up organisms at the DNA level. Dr. Diesel also shares what is currently known in relation to grooming and how it affects both the skin and oral microbiomes, why correlation doesn’t always mean causation in skin diseases, and what’s on the horizon for future studies on the skin microbiome.
